Hi, I’m Jessica McIlveen, a child behaviour and family dynamic specialist with over 10 years of experience working in the fields of social work, psychology, biology, complex behaviours, child development, trauma, yoga therapy and neuroscience.
As you probably know, most of the traditional approaches to parenting use a combination of rewards, punishments and calm logic when our kids are upset.
But here’s the thing: these strategies try to work with parts of the brain children don’t have access to. Because when you try to use your logical adult brain to calm a child whose limbic system is activated, everything just gets worse.
So what can you do? Instead of the surface behaviour you’re seeing, you need to parent the nervous system. Because your child’s nervous system is the real reason for what’s happening.
